Reading and Language Arts

  • Reading Curriculum-California State Content Standards for Reading and Language Arts

*Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Journeys

    Whole group and Small Group learning

  • Phonics- (Phonics First supplemental curriculum)

*Goal-mastery of basic alphabet letters and sounds

*Phonemic Awareness (breaking words up into sounds and blending sounds to make words)

*Reading CVC words like cat, big

  • High Frequency Words- words that most commonly occur in English-Often cannot be “sounded out” (Sight Words)

Mathematics

  • Curriculum aligned with California State Content Standards for Mathematics

*Houghton Mifflin-Math Expressions

This program is designed with Common Core Standards in mind. It is hands on and includes the Mathematical Practices that accompany the Common Core Standards.

*Counting to 100

*Counting on from any given number

*Write numbers to 20

*Understanding quantities

*Greater, Less than, Equal to

*Addition and subtraction with manipulatives

*Decompose numbers (5=3+2 and 5=4+1)

*Base Ten Numbers (18=10 +8)

*Length/Weight

*More of/less of

*Sorting groups of objects by amount

*Shapes and positions

*3-D shapes

*Compose simple shapes to form larger shapes

 

Science and Social Studies

  • Science Curriculum aligned with California NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards)

*We will be piloting 3 different curriculum sets that involve the 4 subjects below:

    *Forces and Interactions: Pushes and Pulls

    *Animals, Plants, and their Environment

    *Weather and Climate

    *Engineering Design

  • Social Studies Curriculum aligned with California State Content Standards for Social Studies

*Student Text and Digital Learning

    *Rules/Good Citizenship

    *Symbols of our state and nation

Other Important Components of our Kindergarten Program

  • Socialization Skills- (this is part of the report card)

*Computer Skills-Being responsible on the computer and the internet-our district has a very strong filter and students use bookmarks to navigate the internet.

*Document Camera and Big Screen TV with Laptop and Apple TV are frequently used to enhance instruction

*iPads have educational apps for students to expand their learning
