Math Resources

In math, we want our students to mathematize! That means we want our students thinking about the relationships between numbers and solving problems using their reasoning skills, not just memorization and following steps. We really want our students thinking about the problems they're working on, not just plugging in a number and reading off an answer. If all we wanted were answers, we could just hand them a calculator! Instead, we promote our students' thinking and reasoning skills as they use what they know to solve things they don't know! And it's really exciting!

If you'd like to get a better understanding of using real math in math class, I encourage everyone to listen to Pam Harris's podcast Math Is Figureoutable. It's easy to find on any podcast app or site. A good place to start might be "Episode 55: For Parents: Why all the new math?

If you ever want to chat about math strategies, models, relationships, and reasoning, please send me a message, an email, or call me! I love exploring math with others!
Hello, Families!

Here are a few resources you can use with your child to practice math:

ST Math Conceptual Math Games
These math games really emphasize understanding of mathematical concepts such as multiplication, division, fractions, and more.

Math Learning Center Apps Visual Models for important mathematical concepts
This is one of my favorite resources to help students understand some of our challenging mathematical concepts. Not everyone has a learning clock at home, but you can absolutely use this great Learning Clock to help your student understand time and how to count elapsed time. Or perhaps you want them to explore fractions or visually represent polygons on a geoboard. These apps are super useful and very engaging for students.

Freckle Adaptive Learning Program
This website is great for reaching students at their level. Students can choose a topic, then the program will give them problems and teach them as they go! It's also great as a practice for the upcoming SBAC testing at the end of the year.
Step 2: Enter your child's first name and last name
Step 3: Enter the class code - 84knrb
Step 4: Choose a class; Either Math or Ela
Step 5: Choose "Practice" or if there is an assignment, click on the backpack
Step 6: If you chose "Practice" choose something you want to work on and have fun!

XtraMath.org Math Fact Practice
This website is great for practicing math facts! It guides your child through addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division practice. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. However, here's the way they can sign in:
Step 1: Go to www.clever.com and login with your student's google info
Step 2: Go to "Mr. Walker's Page"
Step 3: Click on "XtraMath"
Step 4: Enjoy!

Khan Academy Adaptive Learning Program and Specific Topic Resources
This has so many resources, I encourage you to sign up and explore. If you're looking for specific help with a math concept, you can search it on this website.
OR - You can sign your child up on Khan Academy, choose a grade level and topic and just begin learning about that topic! What's great about this program is that it tracks what your child is understanding or what they may need more teaching on, then it gives them mini-lessons on that subject.

Homework and Remembering
Our curriculum has a book for homework titled "Homework and Remembering" and is a great resource for additional practice on concepts we're learning in the classroom. If you're looking for additional practice that is relevant to what we've been learning, I encourage you to use this.
Student Activity Book
This is the primary math workbook we use. We call it the SAB for short.
Here's a list of Count By Videos for Multiplication!
Count by 2's                   Count by 3's                          Count by 4's
Count by 5's                   Count by 6's                          Count by 7's
Count by 8's                   Count by 9's                          Count by 10's
Here are the Practice Tests and Study Guides for the Math Unit tests.
The Practice Tests do not have answers filled in so you can practice at home. The Study Guides have answers so you can check your understanding!
