this is a comparison problem I know it's a comparison when I read it Peter has 13 eggs Joe has for few eggs then Peter some key words that help me know that this is a comparison problem the word than is in there the comparison word shows me on comparing the eggs from Peter and Joe and this is how many eggs does Joe have numbers I have 13 and whenever number is by the word more fewer or less I usually like to circle the number and that were next to it so I remember so now I told kids once I figure out if comparison problem and look at my all my Clues then my first step to solving the one is figuring out who has more says Peter has 13 Joe has four fewer which means less so if I know Joe has 4 Less that means I know Peter has four more so I'm saying that Joe has 4 Less so that means feed her as the opposite which is 4 more than him when did Jay on the top for Joe since I know Peter has the most I give him the biggest comparison bar since Joe has less than him I give him a lower comparison bar and then a circle which I call my more less or fewer Circle because what your number is by the word more fewer or less goes in that Circle if it's asking me at the end of the question how many more or how play last then I'm looking for that number in the circle but in this problem it tells me for less or fewer so I know that I can fill in for in my more less or fewer Circle then I still in what else I know Peter has 13 so that 4 Peter I put 13 right there for him and his bar and sure enough Joe is left empty right now because we're looking for how many Joe has so my question mark goes in there for Joe I don't know how many he has that's what I'm looking for now I set it up this way with a person who has most on top because that's an easy transition for kids because they're used to doing a math mountain and if you kind of see my pin working an imaginary map not even to have them write it in I have them drawn to Partners at the bottom one that's missing so they can either subtract down the mountain they could either like draw 13 circles and cross off for or they can punch count from 4 up 13 or they can write a four and then go five six seven eight nine 10 11 12 in count the circles and most teachers expect them to write an equation that goes with this they could have said 13-4 equals unknown or could have said four plus this other number equals 13 either one works and either one is going to get you the right now as long as you're doing the work correctly so those are two equations that could have worked that go with our math mountain and they could have done work several different ways did any way you do it 13 take away four or counting the circles one two three four five six seven eight nine that means that Joe has 9 how many eggs so I just write eggs always go back in what it says because sometimes it will say how many fewer eggs or how many more eggs and you have to put that word in the label if it asks it in the question question it just says how many eggs
