I'm looking at number 3 mr. green puts 5 tulips and some roses in a vase there are 14 flowers in the vase message to the base how many roses are in the base now what time is to begin with because it doesn't make it a two-step problem because sometimes they'll just ask you how many is it all together and they just want you to add them up a big hint to me to is the word the kids and won't always say then what if I see the three numbers and the word then a lot of times that means a two-step problem I kind of told them look at what's happening if there's a it seems like there's a step you have to do before you can solve the second part of the story that I know it's a two-step there's something missing I can't solve it unless I do this first step first okay so I tell him to set up their papers with a one of the top and two steps so the work from the first step is over here whatever answer you get from the first step you have to bring it over to the second step in use it can you tell the kids that over and over again you're not just doing work over here for nothing take that answer and use it over here somewhere so I go back and look at the top to see what my is all about he put 5 tulips and there's not worth some roses in a vase there are 14 flowers in the vase so to me what it sounds like if I have a total of 14 flowers 5 RT for tulips and then the rest of an unknown problem before it sounds like I'm starting with v I'm adding some roses to the vase and then that equals a total of 14 flowers so five plus those Roses over here equals 14 so if I count from five up to 14 take away 5 I get nine something to write nine and my little unknown and I'm going to draw a little line over here went to to remind myself hey you better use that on step to I didn't do all that work for nothing so I'm going to write 9 you can put an next to it to remind myself I found out how many were roses can I look at what's happening in my second step here does green adds two more roses to the vase so how many are in there now now that I figured out that there were nine now I can just add two more to it and find out how many total roses she has in that bass hey is all I have to do the second step is that means I have 11 roses now roses in the vase stay on two step problems are always going to be using math mountains and just a simple plus problem sometimes it will have comparison bars in the first step and then it will be an unknown problem in the second step and this is one of our last lessons because it kind of incorporates other kinds of problems we've worked with and put that it up is like a two-step problem and sometimes are easier than others but this is one example a two-step problem and how to tackle it
