is about to try to across zeros this is how we start off the chapter teaching them about how we start with 100 and how we ungroup that again the word ungroup you might use borrowing but the kids are being taught to use on group in all on grouping as it is the same thing that you would say is borrowing but what we're doing is we really want the kids understand we're not really borrowing we're not going to get it back it's we're going next door so I can the ones place I tell them is there more on top and stop and just subtract if there's more on the floor you got to go next door the kids need to know the whole problem with this is I don't have enough ones I used when I say I have zero cookies can I give my sister 8 know and I tell him it's like a a book you can't read it backwards you can't start at the 8 mass and no be so easy to just six you might see them doing that at home remind then you have how to start up on the top and work down you wouldn't read a book backwards you can't do the problem backwards so there's one of the floor we got to go next door and then I go home but next door I don't have any tens all right so then I go next door again because they're getting there was more on the floor so I'm starting with the hundred if I should have proof drawing to go with this this is my hundreds block that's how we draw 100 installation we need eight ones I don't have anyone's okay well I could do 100 ones but that would take a long time so I'm going to start off by ungrouping this as 10 10 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 is so now I don't have it I like to show them with the work what I just did over here and how that correlates the problem over here I don't have 100 anymore I do I just don't have it as a 100 block I have ungrouped it and turned it into or traded it out for 10:10 so now I have zero 100 block but I do have 1010 I make sure to ask my kids is that the same thing as one hundred and some said no and so we talked about how it looks different is represented differently but it is still the value is it still 100 it's just so mad if and when I go back in okay so I solved my problem is 0 - 8 no I didn't solve my problem I'm getting closer because now I tell them with my problems. I don't have enough ones so how am I going to get one when I got these tins right here and the kids table just take one of them one of the tens and ungroup that or change that traded for 1 2 3 4 5 6 seven eight nine 10 one of my problem and I have someone before I can just magically add ones though they're not just magically appearing they're coming from that 110 that I am Groot so I have to show that on my problem I don't have 10 tens anymore I have 5 6 7 8 9 10 that's how I'm getting my 10 I kind of like to tell them it's like I am over here going I don't have anyone so I come next door and I I grabbed one of the twins from them hahaha now you only have nine and I jump back over here with no this is important part and I'll talk about this in my video of problems when I'm grouping the kids start with this in the chapter and so they just add 10 cuz there's a zero here and they get used to that because I'm here at 10 over here taking away from over here at the problem is when there's a number here like 6 or 2 then it becomes 16 or 12 because you're adding 10 to the number that was already there from this book that it's start with a hundred they get real familiar with this and so you might be seeing your kid at home and I've seen it in class they had just 10 every time and I have to remind them make sure you look at the number that's here because you're adding 10 to whatever was there and I checked my I had nothing there so I added 10 and I just got 10 one and then when I do with my work is I I can subtract now I do 10 - 8 8 5 6 7 8 a circle what's left and then I have 9 10 and I take away 6 10 so I take away 5/6 and then I Circle what's left carefully I was also important that you teach your kids about has been really sloppy work mess work doing your tens ones too fast or the one start to look like this and every scribbled please make sure that you emphasize neatness and separating them by 5 a.m. send Circle and carefully of Crossing out carefully because when you start getting busy with your Crossing of it looks like you cross off one and you don't count it and then they get the wrong number and they did all this work just to get it wrong so make sure that they're neat and then I write down what I have I have three tens and two ones so 3:10 and I can't - 821 I don't go back and make sure it makes sense I like to have them punch count with we're starting with the bottom number and counting up to the higher big number and we practiced mountains we had math mountains like if I had a math Mountain where that was 10 and that state we practice fighting the other number from counting up from 8 to 10 so they're used to that concept of what I have to do is I have them punch into the weather fest with a candy right now holding the iPad with the other hand but I have them punch the smaller number so I ate and then count out the rest 9:10 and so I think everything went to go from 8 to 10 the difference on this one I start with six account to 96789 so the difference is 3 so if you're having a lot of kids are going to talk about that more problems with ungrouping have seen but this is subtract across zeros
